Gongloo Chicken (Turnip and Chicken Curry

Turnips are a veg that is very cheap in season, but many people are unsure of how to use turnips to make delicious, nutritious food for the whole family. In this recipe fussy eaters will probably not even notice the turnips are there!  Turnips are great for those on diets as they have only 1/3 of the calories of potatoes. They also are high in vitamins A, C, E, Beta Carone, Calcium and copper.


1 onion

1 baby chicken

2 turnips

2 tomatoes


curry powder

garam masala

ginger and garlic paste

cumin seeds




Chop onion and fry in oil until almost golden brown

add 1tbsp ginger paste, 1 tbsp garlic paste, 1tbsp cumin seeds

after 1min add 1tsp garam masala, and 1tbsp curry powder

 mix then add tomatoes and salt to taste

when tomatoes have separated from oil add chicken

stir occasionally until chicken has browned

then add chopped and skinned turnips

mix well

cover with boiling water then turn down heat to simmer

It should be done after around 20 mins to half an hour, when chicken is starting to fall of the bone, and turnips have reduced and are soft and mushy.

mix fresh chopped coriander and a sprinkle of garam masala before serving.
